Statistical Literacy in Critical Education
Statistical Literacy in Critical Education
Our research team is focused on finding ways to support people in developing critical data literacies for citizenship in democratic societies. We take a multi-pronged approach to this issue by focusing on supporting teachers and teacher educators as well as by creating resources that can be used widely. We connect theory to practice in all our work applying research-based insights into local contexts. We also consider policy issues by communicating changes to teachers and teacher educators as well as provide guidance to policy makers.
Data literacy is crucial for today's citizens. However, such literacy needs to go beyond technical skills and disciplinary knowledge to include practice of critical literacy to read and write the world with data.
The greatest lever of transformative change in our public schools are teachers who directly create and enact the curriculum that students experience. However, teachers need support in translating research to practice and making critical data literacy a reality to prepare the next generation for the demands of modern society.
Creating policies to support teachers and students in developing critical data literacy is crucial for transformative systemic change. This requires evaluating current policy and envisioning better policy for the future.
